What’s in a Title?
By Heidi Bakker Kingman
Upon moving to Singapore, I quickly weeded through the new titles and terms that were being applied to me and those like me. I immediately eliminated “dependent” the moment I was presented with this dreaded option on a customs form. (I checked the box for something else… anything else!) Outside of a tax deduction indicator for the IRS, I find little redeeming value in using that word to describe anyone other than a child.
My name as an acronym: Highly Educated Independent Degree carrying Individual. I am a “Heidi” in every sense of the word so dependent is definitely out. And who did not inform Singapore that “Housewife” is sooooo 50’s? And who did not inform Singapore that “Housewife” is sooooo 50’s? I mean really, half of us don’t even live in houses! So imagine, the number of options needed for accuracy: condo-wife, apartment-wife, flat-wife (!), or my personal favorite, the semi-detached-wife. You can ask my husband his preference, but I’m guessing even he doesn’t want to go there. Moving on, I settled on the lesser of the evils…“Trailing Spouse.” I even began to find humor in the label, imagining myself a cloud of silver dust and flames raised by a speeding Formula 1 vehicle. And at the speed with which we made the move to Singapore, quite fitting. So, Trailing Spouse I became.
Behavioral Interviewing
By Alka Chandiramani
Did you know that approximately 30% of companies use an interviewing technique called “Behavioral Interviewing?” For those of us on the other side of the interview desk, this is a technique used to evaluate a candidate’s past experiences and actions. By doing so, the interviewer can determine the candidate’s potential for success based on actual past behaviors and history, instead of hypothetical questions. The interviewer identifies the desired skills and characteristics needed for a particular job and then structures open-ended questions to elicit detailed responses from the candidate.
Classic Résumé / CV pitfalls to avoid
By Alka Chandiramani
Résumé comes from French, meaning ‘summary.’ Curriculum vitæ (CV), is Latin for ‘courses of life.’ Both refer to the document, prepared by a job applicant that is a short account of their job history and qualifications. The word résumé is used in the United States and in Canada, while Curriculum vitæ and CV are prevalent in the United Kingdom, Ireland and New Zealand, with résumé having very little currency.
Setting up your own business
By Richard Hartung
Whether it's to pursue a passion, the result of a move, to escape the corporate world or for something else, an increasing number of people seem to be starting up their own businesses. The good news is that Singapore is one of the easiest places to strike out on your own.
The first step, of course, is to develop a solid business plan, critical for success and a subject worthy of days or weeks of effort.
MOM begins issuing new long term pass cards
Long term immigration passes and work passes are issued to foreigners to regularize their stay in Singapore. Currently, a Disembarkation/Embarkation (D/E) card is issued to facilitate their immigration clearance when entering or leaving Singapore. It is a laminated card which contains essential information (e.g. name, date of birth and Foreign Identification Number) of the pass holder.
What is your Dream?
By Alka Chandiramani
It’s not true just of the business world. Almost every one of us has a dream. Some of us may aspire to travel the world, start a new business, learn a language, get fit or spend more time with our family. Every dream is real; unfortunately, few of those dreams get translated into reality. If dreams are the hope, and beginning is the key, then what stops us from getting started to envision our dreams?
How Well Do You Manage Your Time?
By Alka Chandiramani
It was Edison who said, “Time is really the only capital a human being has, and the only thing he can’t afford to lose.” How then do we manage this effectively? In our age of speed and stress, time is no longer an abstract concept.
The following are some ‘thieves of time’ that can stop us from even beginning to fulfill our dreams. Which of these are most likely to steal yours?

Re-Entering the Workforce
By Ms Gisela Guttmann,
Psychoanalyst/Psychologist
The Counselling Place LLP
Diana*, a 34 year-old business woman, put her career on hold to accompany her husband on an overseas posting to Singapore. It was not an easy decision and initially she felt an identity crisis, low self-confidence and a sense of isolation. The negative effects of leaving the workforce impacted her marriage as she struggled with the power shift in the relationship she attributed to her financial dependence on her husband.
Can I Work with a Dependant Pass?
By Alka Chandiramani
The answer is unequivocally, YES! If you have a Dependant’s Pass (DP) the process to work here is quite simple. All an employer needs to do is fill out a Letter of Consent (LOC) and send it to the Ministry of Manpower. The one page form takes only ten minutes to fill out and requires:
Key Words - What are They?
Did you realize that even if you write the best possible resumé in the world, if it lacks certain "key words" it might be tossed aside? Companies use key word searches (in company resumé databases and on-line job search databases, etc.) to find resumés that best match a specific job or profession.
