About the Speaker
Richard Edward Hale, OBE BBM, had his education at Radley College, Abingdon, UK. After completing his national service in the Royal Navy and spending six months exploring North America he started his career with The HongKong and Shanghai Banking Corporation in October 1958. Over the years he served in London, Paris, Hong Kong, Hamburg, Kuala Lumpur, Tokyo and Singapore before retiring from the bank as CEO Singapore and Director in March 1995. In 1993 he was awarded the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II and, in 1995, the Public Service Star (Bintang Bakti Masyarakat) by the Government of Singapore.
In addition to his environmental interests he is an ardent philatelist and since his retirement in 1995 has become an active researcher into the history of the nineteenth centuary Singapore. His first published work is The Balestiers. The First American Residents of Singapore, but other works are in the pipeline.
