Cafe at Fort Canning Park

Baker boy Baker boy; bake me a cake,
The best I can taste; don’t do it in haste
Baker boy Baker boy; put in some layers
And make it just right for me…


And he does! At the foot of a hill, amidst open lawns, in the heart of the city alongside an art gallery, Singaporean theatre performer Juwanda Hassim bakes exquisite cake creations and sells them with gourmet coffees and artisanal teas.

Creatively and rather appropriately named The Fabulous Baker Boy, his café serves cakes and pies baked to perfection and decorated with care.

 

The Location

The wares are displayed in a simple, warm and welcoming manner. It adds to the charm of the café; as does the open space and green lawns that surround it at the foothill of Fort Canning Park. The venue is shared with the Viridian Art Gallery, which hosts various exhibitions, as well as a pottery studio where you might catch a workshop in progress.  As you sit out at the café, you overlook the vibrant scene at Clarke Quay.

It was hard to make a decision on what to pick for our order and we finally went with a friend’s suggestion to try the ‘Salted Caramel Chocolate torte’ with a cup of gourmet long black coffee and a slice of the ‘Big Lub’s carrot cake’ with ‘Pearl of the Orient’ tea.

The taste of the salted caramel came through in each bite and was just perfect in the way it balanced the chocolate cream and moist cake. The pairing of the torte with the coffee was ideal for me.


Delicious carrot cake and fragrant tea paired together, always make great comfort food and the Fabulous Baker Boy did justice to my expectations.

 

The Baker Boy

Juwanda Hassim is a man with many talents. Along with baking all these sweet treats for his café, he continues to entertain his passion for theatre in Singapore. In his latest stage outing, he played the role of Harry in the comedy musical Company that ran at the Drama Centre recently.

Really, the only regret I had was that since the café opens only at noon, I did not get enough time there. If it hadn’t been school pick-up time, I could have spent an entire day succumbing to the charm of the baker, his wares and the atmosphere, which is a unique mix of culture, domestic-goddess appeal and clean green space.


The Fabulous Baker Boy also offers the option of a carefully prepared meal for lunch or dinner, cold sandwiches throughout the day and a relaxed Sunday brunch.
