About the Event
Inspiring Stories: Liz Coward
In May, At the Table will start a new series of talks designed to compliment our professional development events.
Called Inspiring Stories, our guests will share their experiences of dealing with life changing events which have transformed them into more confident, determined and successful women. While each story is different, they are united by the themes of acceptance, adaptability, resilience and reflection.
None of our guests anticipated the circumstances in which they found themselves. By sharing their stories, we hope that you may be inspired to recognize and appreciate your own inner strengths.
The series will begin with our own At the Table moderator’s story.
Liz Coward was seven when she was involved in a tragic car accident which resulted in the death of her four-year-old sister. It happened in England in the 1970s when children’s grief was rarely acknowledged, a failing which had devastating consequences when Liz was a successful lawyer. At 35 years old, she succumbed to severe depression and acute anxiety. She lost her career virtually overnight, her husband became her carer and she had to re-learn basic living skills.
Liz has coped with periods of mental illness since then but views that first deep depression as a blessing which allowed her time to get to know herself and discover her true passion - writing. Liz pursued her MA in Screenwriting and has since become an accomplished writer and screenwriter. Liz will say that her mental illness has made her laughter deeper, her gratitude more heartfelt and her backbone as strong as steel.
Liz is sharing her inspiring story to help destigmatize mental health and create a more positive spin on this common and debilitating illness.
At the Table is a networking and career group for women, featuring an ongoing series of regular events to exchange views and ideas in an open and welcoming environment. Each get-together highlights a professional topic for discussion, and our guest speakers share their insights from their area of expertise to ensure that the session adds value and that there are meaningful takeaways.
Whether you are currently working or on the job hunt, this is a great way to expand your network and meet other professional women.
