Every year, it wouldn’t be July 4 without ribs, corn, corn dogs – and celebration with the American Association of Singapore. Held this year at The American Club, it is one of the marquee events of AAS that didn’t disappoint.
The nation’s 250th birthday was marked in style. Nothing less would have sufficed, and the community and its friends rose to the occasion. What began many decades ago with a loose collection of expatriates gathering far from home has become a must-attend event on the calendar. In keeping with such a milestone, the event was sold out!
Highlights included the always popular watermelon-eating contest, the ever hard-to-beat bouncy castles, raffles galore and sparklers. The food was exceptional: burgers, fried chicken, corn dogs, cherry pie and cake. These treats were washed down with soda, lemonade, beer and margaritas. There was cookie baking along with arts & crafts. Kids ran everywhere, adults chased them, and a Dixieland band played. What was not to love!?
There was also a serious side: Ambassador Dr Anjani Sinha stopped by. There were lovely renditions of the national anthems of Singapore and of the United States were sung by students from schools in Singapore. Sailors presented the colors. Master of Ceremonies Glenn Van Zutphen kept the evening moving along.
AAS, which aspires to bring the best of American culture, music, sports and food to the American community and its friends,
relies on events like this to stay financially
healthy.
Here’s how one attendee described the celebration: “I’ve attended the 4th of July events with my family for the past few years, and this year was by far our favorite! We were there from start to finish and couldn’t believe how quickly the time went by. There was truly something for everyone.”
