GUESTS OF HONOR

We are thrilled to honor Janet and Ron Stride at this year's George Washington Ball. In their 37 years in Singapore, the Strides have given countless hours of service to not only the community in Singapore, but the wider region, as well. They are actively involved in community work in Indonesia, Thailand and Singapore. Janet has been a long-time volunteer at Friends of the Museums (FOM), American Women's Association (AWA) and was on the GWB committee for a decade. Ron has been an active board member of several non-government organizations. He served on the AAS Executive Committee for many years, four as President. He is currently the Chairman of Food from the Heart, a Singapore-based food distribution charity. He's also Vice Chairman of an education-focused charity in Jakarta. Additionally, the Strides have a foundation that sponsors tuition and expenses for a number of high school and college students in the USA.

About our Charity:
VIVA Foundation
for Children with Cancer

Cancer is the leading cause of death by illness among children. And even those who win their battle with cancer have often faced months or even years of treatments. Our littlest souls should be playing with friends, not laying in hospital beds. We need to find a cure.

That’s why this year, the George Washington Ball is supporting VIVA Foundation for Children with Cancer to establish two rooms at the VIVA Hub for patients, survivors and their family members impacted by childhood cancer under their Life Program. VIVA's Life Program aims to empower childhood cancer survivors to live healthy, happy and fulfilling lives. This Program encompasses five key areas: personalised dietary guidance, physical activities to boost health, healthy sleep habits, emotional resilience which includes psychosocial support, and support for academic and career growth to pave the path for a brighter future.  With this comprehensive approach, survivors are equipped to thrive in life.

These rooms will provide the required facilities and resources to carry out activities such as events, workshops and evidence-based interventions like cognitive-behavioural therapy, and mindfulness techniques.

More widely, VIVA is a Singapore-based charity which focuses on saving lives of children with cancer through research, medical care and education. The organization works very closely with the world- renowned, US-based St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital with the ambitious aim of translating the high cure rates achieved by St. Jude into Singapore and the wider Asia region.

VIVA was born out of a mother’s grateful love. After her son won his own battle against his cancer, Jennifer Yeo dedicated her life to ending childhood cancer so that every child has a future.

The word “VIVA” is an acclamation for “long live!” and VIVA works to rewrite the future of children with cancer, as every child deserves to live and no child should die in the dawn of their lives.

A portion of the proceeds of the event also go to support the American Association of Singapore, a 107-year-old non-profit.
