Singapore's National Day

Many of us expats have been living in Singapore quite some time so we are used to the fantastic display of fireworks and patriotism on August 9. But for those of you new to the Little Red Dot, you may not know what all the hubbub was about this weekend. Here's a little history behind Singapore's big bash.

Singapore National Day, celebrated on August 9th every year, marks the day of Singapore's independence from Malaysia in 1965. Ass brief history of Singapore National Day:

  1. Colonial History: Singapore was a British colony from the early 19th century until World War II. It was occupied by the Japanese during the war and then returned to British control after Japan's surrender. Head to the Former Ford Factory to learn more about this era of Singapore's history.

  2. Merger and Separation: In 1963, Singapore merged with Malaysia to form the Federation of Malaysia. However, tensions between the two territories led to Singapore's separation from Malaysia on August 9, 1965, making it an independent and sovereign nation.

  3. Challenges of Independence: Singapore's early years as an independent nation were challenging. The country had limited resources, high unemployment, and social unrest. The government, led by Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew, faced the difficult task of nation-building and economic development. Declaring English as the language of the nation and creating a system of canals to capture rain water helped alleviate some of these early problems.

  4. Transformation and Progress: Under the leadership of Lee Kuan Yew and subsequent leaders, Singapore embarked on a journey of rapid economic development and modernization. The government implemented policies to attract foreign investments, develop industries, and improve education and healthcare systems.

  5. Cultural Diversity: Singapore's National Day celebrations highlight its multicultural society. The country is home to a diverse population with various ethnicities, languages, and religions. The National Day Parade typically includes performances that showcase this cultural diversity.

  6. National Symbols: The Singapore flag, with its red background symbolizing universal brotherhood and equality, and the white crescent moon representing a young nation on the rise, holds significant importance. The five stars arranged in a circle on the flag represent Singapore's ideals of democracy, peace, progress, justice, and equality.

7. National Day Parade: The National Day Parade is the centerpiece of the

celebrations. It usually includes military displays, cultural performances, and

grand fireworks finale. The parade showcases Singapore's achievements, unity,

and aspirations.

8. Fireworks and Flyovers: A spectacular display of fireworks fills the air. And you

know what's really cool? They practice National Day for a few weeks prior to the

event. Don't worry: those flyovers are not another nation attacking us. Nope! The

pilots are simply practicing for the big day. And they practice the fireworks, too.

So if you can't make the big display on August 9, sneak out a couple of

weekends before to grab a glimpse.

Singapore National Day is a momentous occasion that commemorates the nation's history, progress, and unity.
